We arrived at the Rome airport around 9:30 am and we had only had about an hour of sleep. Our friends, Tom & Kathy, welcomed us. We showered and visited with them, ate lunch and decided that rather than nap, we'd keep moving and retire early to bed that night. We drove to a nearby city, Tivoli, to see the Villa d'Este and the accompanying gardens. The Villa d'Este was commissioned in the late 1500's by Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este, a grandson of Pope Alexander V.
Besides columns and arches, I love a good ceiling!
By reviving Roman techniques of hydraulic engineering to supply water to a sequence of fountains, the cardinal created a fantasy garden.
The surrounding countryside
Looking down on a series of pools. The next picture is taken from the walkway beyond the 3rd pool.
Looking back up to the top where I took the last picture.
Some closeups

I wish these photos could convey just how MANY fountains there were at this place. Hundreds. In the above photo, there were 3 levels of fountains every couple of feet the entire length of the walkway. It was a beautiful garden and just so European-feeling.

We haven't been here. It looks pretty.
By the way, your test to prove I'm not a robot is the most difficult I've ever run across. Not just this one, but all of them. They're so difficult that perhaps only a robot could make sense of them! :-)
