This girl brought me to tears with her performance last night in the ladies figure skating short program. Joannie Rochette skated beautifully just a few days after her mother died from a heart attack while in Vancouver with her. She is a Canadian athlete, so skating before a home crowd I'm sure she felt their love and support. Amazing strength. If you missed it, you should watch it.
I also loved her dress.

What an amazing performance in spite of tragic circumstances. Even if she doesn’t win a medal for her performance, Rochette deserves a gold medal for persevering through an extremely difficult time. Her story makes me want to watch her in figure skating just to see how she does.
I didn't get to watch it yet, but just reading your description made me all teary!
I watched her skate last night, and again all the recaps this morning, and cried every single time. I can't imagine doing what she is doing given the circumstances, and her grace and poise are so admirable. Looking at her face as she finished, there was no doubt that her mom was there in spirit. And the tears start flowing again, just thinking about it!!!!
Thank you so much for putting a link to it on your post. I've heard a lot about it today, but didn't get to watch it last night. I'm wiping tears away as I type this. Terrible. Just tragic. What an incredible job she did under the circumstances. Just an amazing young woman. I still can't believe she skated through all that.
Me too! We watched it and I didn't realize at first that she was the one who lost her mother. It wasn't until Steve said, "Man, she need to smile. It looks like she's about to cry!!" Then I remembered and I about cried. Then Steve felt bad for thinking that.
So, I'm sure you've seen Joannie's long program by now. That REALLY made me cry, especially when they showed her looking up at the end, like, "What did you think, mom?" I feel that way sometimes when I perform. I had a performance with the Chorale the day Mom passed away. I always wonder if she gets to watch.
Thanks for possting this
